A man who moves earth for a living knows a thing or two about engineering under pressure.

When a heavy machinery contractor asked Alpha Gate Automation to install an automatic gate system at his Redland Bay property, the brief was simple: One-of-a-kind design, controlled access, and a gate that does justice to the scale of what sits behind it.

Then came the fine print…

No mains power. A dense bush land canopy surrounding the gate position, blocking usable sunlight for most of the day. And the house sitting 400 metres away – completely out of reach of any conventional wired installation.

Oh, and one final instruction: “Take it one step further.”

Off-grid solar gate automation

A site with no mains power and limited sun exposure would have ended the conversation with most installers. But for our chief installer, Leo, with fifteen years and over 1,900 custom installations behind him, solving problems like this are his thing.

So he engineered a bespoke solar solution, calculated to operate on as little as two hours of usable sunlight per day, with the panel mounted high to maximise exposure through the surrounding canopy.

The result is an automated gate that runs entirely independently. No wired power, no cable run to the house, no dependency on anything beyond what the sky provides.

The gate itself is a trackless cantilever sliding gate, meaning there’s no ground track to clog with gravel, leaf litter, or any other debris from the kind of vehicles that work this property for a living.

With the engineering solved, Leo turned to the instruction he hadn’t forgotten.

The result is a laser-cut aluminium custom gate panel, featuring eucalyptus leaf forms, abstracted into a bold, large-scale design that feels both artistic and unmistakably at home in the surrounding bush.
